Some Attention to Legal Is All You Need: A Legal Checklist for AI Customers

Read Time: 2 minutes

The business world has moved on from the “wow moment” of ChatGPT’s release in late 2022 to the phase of implementing AI solutions—especially new GenAI solutions—into their operations to realize efficiency gains and create value.

To assist companies in the journey of procuring and implementing AI solutions, our experienced AI and Commercial and Technology Contracts lawyers have crafted a high-level, non-exhaustive checklist for customers of AI solutions. This checklist is tailored for customers that will use AI, and related output, strictly for internal purposes (e.g., meeting “assistants” that record and summarize meetings and programs that make classifications or predictions to help human decision makers).

If you intend to use an AI solution, or its output, for any external use case (e.g., write computer code that will be in your products, produce images that will be commercialized, or incorporate AI functionality into your products or services), subsequent checklists will address more issues specific to those external use cases.

Note: This checklist, last updated on January 4, 2024, will be periodically revised to reflect changes in the AI legal landscape.
